How a Breast CT Examination works

Breast computed tomography (breast CT) is a modern, specialized 3D imaging technique based on innovative photon-counting technology.
It is primarily used when traditional methods like mammography or ultrasound do not provide clear results. In addition, the breast is not compressed during the examination. Instead, the woman lies in a prone position, and the procedure is contactless. This makes the examination significantly more comfortable and pain-free for many patients, especially for those with sensitive tissue or after surgery.

But how does a breast CT scan actually work? Here is an overview:

Examination Process

1. Individual Consultation

    Before the examination, a personal consultation is held with the attending physician. During this conversation, the procedure, its benefits, and any individual questions from the patient are discussed.

    2. Positioning and Scan

    The patient lies in a prone position on the examination table and places one breast into the designated opening in the table. The breast hangs freely downward without being compressed, so it is completely compression-free.
    The scan is performed using a spiral CT system based on photon-counting technology, which rotates in a spiral motion around the breast within a few seconds, capturing thousands of projections. Afterwards, advanced software is used to create high-quality 3D images from the scanned data. If both breasts are being examined, the position is briefly adjusted, and the second scan is performed.

    3. Image Analysis and Medical Consultation

    After the scan, the images are analyzed. The breast can be viewed as a whole in 3D, but also layer by layer. This helps the doctor quickly detect even the smallest changes that might otherwise remain hidden.
